About Eric Wheeler:

I grew up in the suburban Chicago area and earned a B.A. in History from Macalester College in 1970 and later received a Master of Arts in Teaching History degree from the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire in 1987. I have lived in western Wisconsin since the early 1970s and worked as a real estate appraiser/assessor in the area for nearly thirty years. In the late 1990s I combined my work experience as a property appraiser with my life-long interest in history and began to work in the field of historic preservation.

Since 1996 I have worked as an independent consultant in historic preservation projects throughout Wisconsin. I have prepared nominations for the National Register of Historic Places and surveyed buildings for federal/state highway compliance, national register eligibility and local landmark status. I have designed, researched and written text for self-guided walking and audio tours of scenic and historic sites and architecturally significant buildings. I have worked on extensive oral history projects and have produced oral history documentaries for radio broadcast. I consider myself a teacher and advocate for historic preservation and have led numerous walking tours and taught classes in architectural history. I have also served on local and statewide historic preservation organizations.

My interest in historic architecture extends to my personal as well as professional life. Whether I am traveling locally or to distant regions, I am always on the lookout for buildings that tell the story of a community and define a sense of place. Eric is now also exploring and interpreting the built environment in Portland, Oregon.
